1. In another study, prolonged oesophageal transit in a group of patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease persisted after a surgical antireflux procedure. 2. However, two recent placebo controlled studies using prolonged oesophageal pH monitoring failed to show any effect of theophylline or Beta agonists on the severity of GOR parameters. 3. The prolonged oesophageal acid exposure seen in patients with hiatus hernia is because of reduced acid clearance but it is only seen in patients with lower oesophageal sphincter deficiency. 4. Oesophageal sensitivity to acid was preserved in patients with impaired peristalsis and oesophagitis. 5. Reflux symptoms lasted longer in patients with prolonged oesophageal acid exposure but were still reported for a small fraction of the total acid exposure time. 6. Symptoms during overnight pH monitoring lasted longer in patients with prolonged oesophageal acid exposure. |
