1.   An upright cactuslike shrub with both broad leaves and little short spines.

2.   It has flattish leaves, which get very woody around their edges and have little white spines.

3.   It looks like a nightmarish sea-spider bristling with little black spines.

4.   They had barbs on their little spines like fish hooks.
