1. API NetWorks Inc. of Concord sells Samsung-made Alpha chips to Compaq, and also produces its own line of Alpha-based server computers. 2. As part of the settlement, Intel continues to make Alpha chips at the fab under contract to Compaq, which now owns the Alpha design. 3. Because DEC produces relatively few Alpha chips, it has been looking for someone to buy all or part of its underutilized chip production plant in Hudson, Mass. 4. About three-quarters of that comes from sales of Alpha chips and motherboards to Compaq. 5. Alpha chips consistently have been faster and more powerful than the popular Pentium series of processors from Intel Corp. 6. But only a fraction of those NT systems currently use Alpha chips. 7. Compaq Computer Corp. made good Monday on its promise to continue supporting and developing systems that use the speedy Alpha chip acquired when it took over Digital Equipment Corp. 8. Digital recently announced steep price cuts on Alpha microprocessors, as well as servers and workstations using the Alpha chips. 9. Dean McCarron, chip analyst with Arizona-based Mercury Research, said DEC only produced two or three hundred thousand Alpha chips last year. 10. Digital uses the Alpha chip on its legendary Alta Vista Internet search engine. |
