1.   Some new chips incorporate tiny electromechanical or electrochemical devices to do jobs that used to be done by more expensive electronics.

2.   ...the new chip and PIN cards.

3.   New chip technology that will give a variable speed drive is also being introduced with a replacement control panel.

4.   Already the largest supplier of flash memory chips for mobile phones, Intel hopes the new chips will also find a home in that burgeoning market.

5.   AMD has nabbed only one large computer maker -- Digital Equipment Corp. -- for its new chips.

6.   AMD expects the new chip to compete favorably against the latest offerings from industry titan Intel, and investors appear to agree.

7.   Analysts expect to see laptops incorporating the new chips as early the middle of this month.

8.   And rival Hewlett Packard Co. is set to unveil a new chip early next year that will compete directly against Alpha.

9.   And if that new chip has problems, will it be referred to as the Deviated Septium?
