1.   In July, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved a measure introduced by Conrad Burns, R-Mont., to cut funds for the wolf restoration project.

2.   Officials of the wildlife agency said the budget cuts went deep, and three of the five members of the wolf project staff were laid off.

3.   On average, a pack of wolves killed an elk every one to five days, according to a biennial report on the wolf project released in mid-October.
