1.   Daschle insisted on Thursday that the votes for the bill were solid and that there were more than enough senators willing to vote against a filibuster.

2.   On each initiative he will find significant numbers of Democrats willing to vote with him.

3.   These first-term Southerners represent a radical shift from tradition in an increasingly suburban South more willing to vote for newcomers.

4.   With white Atlantans increasingly willing to vote for blacks, and strong black turnout, Lewis knows that his seat is safe.
