1. A slick green oilcloth of mold was rotting the wood beneath. 2. Dirt can build up too, and both can ruin paint and eventually rot wood. 3. Gaps and cracks allow windblown water to creep in and rot wood. 4. The fungus earns its living by taking the nutrients released as it rots wood. 5. The leaves began backing up, damming the water which rotted the wood behind and under the gutters. 6. There may be some places, like columns, posts and windowsills, where the wood is rotted. 7. Zlmost every window gets some, but not enough to rot the wood. 8. Tension cables in the roof had to be tightened regularly to offset settling, and the roof had to be cleared to prevent wet leaves from rotting the wood. 9. The researchers also worry about huge quantities of carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere from the fires and rotting wood left by loggers. |
