1.   This study has shown that EGF can be found in the endothelial cells immediately adjacent to basal cell layers of the normal oesophagus, including those forming papillae.

2.   It is generally believed that the normal oesophagus is only active in response to a stimulus and that non-glutitive activity of the oesophageal body is mostly abnormal.

3.   Experiments were therefore designed to try to show the existence of bicarbonate secretion by the normal human oesophagus.
