1. A geothermal plant, which converts steam and water heated by underground magma into power, has been built on the side of a live volcano at Pahoa. 2. And it would encourage development of geothermal plants on federal lands and ease permitting for renewable-fuel plants. 3. Geothermal plants have even reduced geysers in Iceland, home to Geysir, namesake of all geysers. 4. Geothermal plants produce electricity by driving turbines with steam produced by heat deep in the earth. 5. Geothermal plants use hot water taken from the ground to produce steam, which is forced through turbines to produce energy. 6. Geothermal plants use naturally occurring steam found thousands of feet in the earth to turn turbines to generate electricity. 7. In Iceland, children play in an opalescent hot springs created by runoff from a geothermal plant. 8. Magma, based in San Diego, operates seven geothermal plants in Southern California and it holds interests in other projects in California and Nevada. 9. One drawback of geothermal plants, though, is they must be built where the steam occurs. 10. The company also has geothermal plants in the western U.S. and is building similar projects in the Philippines and Indonesia. |
