1. Patients with familial adenomatous polyposis have a uniformily excellent functional result. 2. By contrast, restorative proctocolectomy for slow transit constipation is now no longer recommended as half have had their pouch excised because they were dissatisfied with the functional results. 3. The functional result in patients with ulcerative colitis is extremely variable. 4. Half of all the failures are because patients are dissatisfied with the functional results of this operation. 5. Of the two patients with recurrent pouchitis who have ulcerative colitis both have had pouch excision because of poor functional results. 6. Nevertheless, the pouch operation failed in only three patients, the other seven having satisfactory functional results. 7. Geisler and Albrecht said they were astounded to learn that the neural responses in monkeys and the functional MRI results were identical. 8.
