1.   If the molding has been painted over, use a stiff putty knife to cut the paint seam between the stop molding and the door casing.

2.   The baseboard is installed last because it has to butt against the door casing.

3.   The door casing on older homes is often four- to sxi-inches wide with decorative square blocks at the corners and plinth blocks at the floor.

4.   You can also take off the door casing that surrounds the pocket opening and peer in with a flashlight.
