1.   Before applying paint to the door, lightly clean the surface with white spirit to remove any dirt or grease.

2.   Clean the surface before applying the paint with a brush or roller.

3.   If the flashing looks sound but is obviously porous, clean the surface thoroughly with a wire brush.

4.   Aluminum that has previously been painted can hold paint better than wood if the surface is thoroughly cleaned.

5.   Be careful when cleaning wood surfaces.

6.   One is to sand and clean the surface, then apply two or three coats of polyurethane varnish, sanding lightly between coats.

7.   Surfaces can be cleaned with mineral spirits or solvents, but remove all traces of those materials.

10.   The surface should be cleaned with trisodium phosphate, a cleaner sold in paint stores and paint departments, usually under the name TSP.
