1.   At Harvard, he majored in pure mathematics but his interest soon shifted to applied math.

2.   He thinks a letter of recommendation from his employer helped him get admitted to Cornell, where he hopes to study applied math.

3.   Re-admitted to college, he changed majors as quickly as the high-country weather, from civil engineering to electrical engineering to applied math.

4.   They spend half the day in classrooms studying applied math, manufacturing theory, computer programming and blueprint reading.
