21. Subjects with atrophy had lower mean sham fed, maximal, and peak acid output than all other subjects. 22. Basal serum gastrin concentratiown was negatively associated with maximal acid output and peak acid output. 23. Using multiple linear regression, only the presence of gastritis with atrophy was independently and negatively associated with sham fed, maximal, and peak acid output. 24. An age dependent decline in acid output and gastric secretory volume has been reported in old subjects with normal gastric mucosa. 25. We have not found a diminution in gastric acid output in old subjects with histologically normal stomachs under basal or stimulated conditions. 26. Acid output and secretory volumes were preserved during sham feeding, which is considered to assess cholinergic pathways and after gastrinergic stimulation with pentagastrin. 27. Gastric acid output, however, is not changed by treatment of the infection. 28. The authors concluded that increased antral gastrin is important in the pathogenesis of an increased maximal acid output in smokers with a duodenal ulcer. 29. The pepsin output in response to gastrin releasing peptide followed the same pattern as the acid output. 30. A major reason for this is the technical difficulty of reliably determining acid output in response to a meal. |
