1.   Christianity has long celebrated the slain infants of Bethlehem as the first Christian martyrs.

2.   Graves of slain infants and adults ringed the perimeter of the camp, marked with sticks holding white slips of paper bearing the handwritten names of the victims.

3.   President Nelson Mandela and other black leaders visited the crime scene and the family of the slain infant.

4.   The parents of the slain infant said they would not bury their daughter until the area was back under Israeli control.

5.   The public gallery was full of black onlookers, including relatives of the slain infant and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, the ex-wife of President Nelson Mandela.
