1.   This area ranges from almost full sun, beyond the herb bed, to deep shade adjoining the house.

2.   A single pimpernel in the herb bed may be a lovely thing, with its starlike blossoms, but a swarm of them will smother the French tarragon.

3.   Look for big, soft-leafed plants that the snow may have knocked over, such as a comfrey plant toppled onto the thyme in your herb bed.

4.   The herb beds and pathway were lined with an expanded shale that looks like small silver gravel.

5.   These mint relatives surround the timber-framed herb beds in my backyard.
