1. Other regions, which did not happen to pick up a rotation, would become oval-shaped objects called elliptical galaxies. 2. But they do not seem to have the staying power of the elliptical galaxies. 3. Elliptical galaxies, however, appear like thick, almost nondescript blobs of light, no matter their age. 4. Some elliptical galaxies have streams of stars orbiting around them. 5. The detailed simulations could help astronomers figure out whether the football-shape elliptical galaxies they observe are the result of spiral galaxies that have collided and combined. 6. There were the familiar spiral and elliptical galaxies and some irregular shapes previously recognized. 7. These elliptical galaxies contained many red stars, indicating that they were already old and must have formed a short time after the Big Bang. 8. This would indicate that elliptical galaxies do not evolve in the same way as spiral formations. 9. Whatever the exact time, it did not take long, the Hubble scientists said, before these primeval galaxies resembled similar elliptical galaxies today. 10. Also seen are neat and apparently very old elliptical galaxies. |
