A second round of talks between Thai officers and Burmese forces refusing to leave Thai soil failed Sunday and the intruders were seen laying mines in the border area. 4. A number of Karen refugees were also kidnapped from Thai soil by armed personnel allied with the Rangoon government. 5. Adisorn Montachai, a Thai district chief near the area of conflict, said fighting had resumed Friday morning and several mortar shells had landed on Thai soil. 6. Banpot also noted that police this year had raided two refineries on Thai soil, apparently the first ones operating here for several years. 7. Border patrol police have been reinforced to ensure the fighting will not spill over to Thai soil, said Col. Somkuan Sangpattaranetr, the army spokesman. 8. Burmese rebels urged Thailand Sunday to protect refugees fleeing attacks by Burmese government forces, accused of killing two refugees and a Thai on Thai soil. 9. Burmese troops crossed into Thai territory at least once during the fighting, and also fired hundreds of artillery shells that landed on Thai soil. 10. But a Karen source said Thai soldiers told him they had seen the bodies of Burmese soldiers on Thai soil. |
