1.   With raw edges level, tack bias strip around neck edge with ends on top of facing.

2.   A tack strip is a strip of wood about an inch wide with the pointed ends of tacks sticking up through it at a slight angle.

3.   After the carpet has been removed and the tack strips are pulled up, wood putty then can be used to fill the holes.

4.   In some cases, carpeting over a hardwood floor is installed with wooden tack strips along the edges.

5.   Next, carefully pry up the tack strips while trying to avoid scratching the floor.

6.   Others proposed obstructions, such as fences, tack strips and barb wire.

7.   Removing the tack strips will leave small nail holes in the floor.

8.   The gap between the tack strip and the baseboard allows clearance to tuck the edges of carpet down and hide any irregularities.

10.   The tack strips are nailed down close to the baseboards with the tacks pointing toward the wall and away from the center of the room.
