1.   Fortunately, some sediments, by rare good fortune, survive from very ancient times with little or no loss of legibility.

5.   The people of the Middle Ages inherited sea-walls and drainage channels which had survived from the Roman occupation.

7.   Herstmonceux Castle in Sussex survives from this period, as does the later moated house of Oxburgh Hall in Norfolk.

8.   In Cracow, sections of the city walls survive from Medieval building.

9.   In Stockholm, the Riddarholm Church survives from the Franciscan Abbey, founded in the thirteenth century.
