1. Soot particles absorb sunlight very effectively but allow long-wave thermal radiation emitted by the earth to pass through unaffected. 2. Among the worst offenders in adding small soot particles to the New York City environment has been partly burned sulfur-laden fuel from diesel vehicles. 3. But many cities still see dozens of days each year when levels of the small soot particles far exceed the proposed federal standard. 4. Doctors say the sulfur attaches to tiny soot particles that penetrate human lungs where it mixes with water to form a potent acid, damaging the tissues. 5. Earlier studies had hinted at a link between fine soot particles and lung cancer. 6. Health researchers said it is dangerous to breathe the minuscule soot particles now drifting across Texas, but they have difficulty quantifying the health risks. 7. Older plants also emit small soot particles and toxic chemicals such as benzene and formaldehyde. 8. Recent research has shown that the smaller soot particles, which are suspended in the air as an aerosol, are a greater health risk than the larger particles. 9. That assertion was dismissed by EPA officials and researchers, who said there is a tremendous volume of research indicating that fine soot particles cause premature deaths. 10. The mortals and angels hop around randomly like soot particles in Brownian motion. |
