1.   He has spent his entire career there, six years as a uniformed patrolman, the last four with a plainclothes anticrime unit.

2.   The department under Bratton, and now under the new commissioner, Howard Safir, has put increasing numbers of officers in plainclothes units to investigate drug trafficking organizations.

3.   Police say Ferguson, a parolee who was carrying heroin, was killed after he and other drug suspects were stopped by members of a plainclothes narcotics unit.

4.   Aleman and Rosario, both members of a plainclothes unit, were in the stationhouse when Louima was assaulted.

5.   And like the four officers, Conway was a member of the Street Crime Unit, a controversial plainclothes unit that patrols high-crime areas.

6.   The officers were members of a roving unit plainclothes unit that has been accused by some of stopping and frisking young black men without cause.
