1.   In June, the U.S. government placed a quota that limits gluten imports from European Union nations for three years.

2.   Wheat gluten imports from the European Union are restricted under a three-year quota that entered its second year in June.

3.   The EU action follows a World Trade Organization ruling that found higher U.S. tariffs on wheat gluten imports from the EU were improper because other countries were exempted.

4.   The proposed EU duty on U.S. corn gluten imports would have the same financial impact on the U.S. corn gluten industry, the Commission noted.

5.   The quotas, which expired on Friday night, had angered European producers and prompted the European Union to put high tariffs on U.S. corn gluten imports.

6.   Also, both sides agreed to consultations on wheat gluten imports to the United States if imports rise substantially.
