1.   Mediators led by Organization of African Unity secretary-general Salim Ahmed Salim will hold a series of meetings Sunday to offer peace proposals to the feuding sides.

2.   U.S. envoy James Pardew and his European Union counterpart, Francois Leotard, continued their efforts Tuesday to persuade the feuding sides to sign the peace plan.

3.   Western diplomats said they were working to salvage the talks and get the feuding sides to set aside their differences and reach a peaceful settlement to end the rebellion.

4.   Despite repeated efforts by local business and professional groups to end the crisis, the feuding sides failed to find a solution, resulting in escalating street violence.

5.   The police fired tear-gas at the demonstrators and tried to set up a cordon to separate the feuding sides.

6.   The daily Morning Sun, quoting Abdus Salam Talukder, secretary-general of the ruling party, said informal talls between the two feuding sides were continuing.
