1.   Earlier excavations there had yielded the remains of occupations in Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic times.

2.   Tailing piles, the refuse from those earlier excavations, form giant ridges along the creeks and roads.

3.   Earlier excavations in the area turned up an intricate royal burial suit of jade pieces sewn together with gold thread.

4.   Earlier excavation work in October proved inconclusive.
