1.   During municipal elections last December he pushed for direct elections, in place of the old system of lists controlled by party bosses.

2.   His opponents say his return was a violation of a town code calling for direct election of the Mayor.

3.   Unlike in Slovenia, there was no separate direct election for the Croatian President, who was instead to be elected by the Croatian Assembly.

4.   Eighteen East German delegates were to sit in the European Parliament pending direct elections.

5.   He not only saw off no-confidence motions, but won the Congress round to supporting direct elections for an executive presidency.

6.   Agreement already existed, he said, on the need for national unity, the prevalence of freedoms and the direct election of the president.
