1. Blue Bell, Pennsylvania-based Unisys struggled for years with declining demand for its large mainframe computers as users increasingly favored smaller desktop models. 2. A mechanical device lets you tilt the back of the keyboard as you can with desktop models. 3. All notebook computers use a liquid-crystal display screen in place of the television-type monitors on desktop models. 4. Figuring in the built-in display, they can end up costing little more than functionally similar desktop models. 5. Intel will charge only those of its staffers who want a notebook PC instead a desktop model or a flat-panel LCD screen instead of a conventional monitor. 6. It needs to be inexpensive -- less than double the cost of a comparable desktop model -- and it needs to be ergonomically comfortable. 7. Laptops are more mobile than desktop models, but they have their own problems, including smaller screens, smaller keyboards and less useful pointing devices. 8. Next week, Gateway plans to introduce a series of desktop models with a non-beige color scheme. 9. The company also will announce today double digit price reductions on notebook PCs, desktop models and servers. 10. The e-Mail PostBox is a desktop model with a few more features than e-Mail Express. |
