1. Debate on the measure was interrupted by the tax cut bill but is scheduled to resume after the recess. 2. Although several tax cut bills already have been introduced in the House, none call for eliminations of the capital gains or estate levies. 3. An amendment to do that has been attached to a spending cut bill that is expected to pass and to be signed by President Clinton. 4. Clinton has said he would veto the tax cut bill as too large. 5. Conservative Democrats, middle-of-the-roaders, even liberals like Lewis who had repeatedly blasted the tax cut bill were there. 6. Congress would probably not pass a major tax cut bill until the fall, and consumers would likely not respond for many months thereafter. 7. Connecticut residents will be some of the top beneficiaries of a tax cut bill passed the House today. 8. Democrats concede that, at the very least, they will need to draft another tax cut bill to fix the AMT. 9. Democrats used the debate to protest that the tax cut bill would imperil Social Security retirement programs. 10. Even those totally opposed to the Republican tax cut bill said it would not affect their votes. |
