1. Life, civic life included, is not as simple as the purveying of fashionable ideas suggests. 2. They seek, correctly, to revitalize our atrophied sense of civic life but we need to go much further. 3. Yet, increasingly, vicarious experience via film, video and music is a substitute for civic life and community. 4. Amid the slime of our civic life, the most feared journalist in America is not Bob Woodward, not Michael Isikoff, not even Matt Drudge. 5. And being a good citizen in civic life burnishes the corporate image and helps ensure an economically vibrant community of consumers. 6. And busy women are blamed for everything from the proliferation of latchkey children to the decline of civic life. 7. As an organization with an important role in the civic life of communities, it cannot be allowed to operate outside laws designed to eradicate bigotry. 8. As Bullock noted, however, other aspects of civic life have failed to generate the same level of enthusiasm for financing public services. 9. As more Americans withdraw from civic life, their distrust in their institutions and each other grows. 10. Because while an e-vote might attract a notoriously disengaged young crowd, the physical act of voting still captures the imagination of older advocates of civic life. |
