1. The lesions were found in the atrophic mucosa of the gastric corpus and fundus except for one antral carcinoid tumour. 2. The diagnosis of carcinoid tumours was based on the typical histological morphology and positive Grimelius staining. 3. In the present follow up gastroscopy, the former patient harboured a new carcinoid tumour in a different location of the gastric corpus. 4. In six patients the specimens still showed nodular argyrophil cell hyperplasia, and one patient had developed a carcinoid tumour. 5. Hypergastrinaemia in patients with type A atrophic gastritis and the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome is also accompanied by an increased incidence of gastric carcinoid tumours. 6. Similarly, the increased incidence of carcinoid tumours found in patients wth type A atrophic gastritis and patients with the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome has been associated with hypergastrinaemia. |
