71.   The European Parliament Wednesday started hearings to ratify the appointment of commissioners selected to serve in the new European Commission under incoming president Jacques Santer of Luxembourg.

72.   The idea was that an incoming president would use the momentum of victory to ensure a parliamentary majority and thus have a clear run to carry out his reforms.

73.   The new incoming Gaullist president will now be met with the old office of former president Charles de Gaulle.
