1.   In the absence of government coordination, families and neighbors have set up impromptu tent communities and mutual-support networks from Istanbul and Izmit.

2.   Tent communities have sprung up in Kifisia, Metamorfosi and other northern neighborhoods, where the quake struck most strongly.

3.   Far from being the temporary tent communities the name might suggest, they are cities within cities, full-scale urban zones with schools and hospitals, clinics and mosques.

4.   Students also have erected a tent community, dubbed Democracy Village, near the campus museum where the APEC leaders will hold their meeting.
