1. The more militant and threatening the pressure from below, the more vigorously the propertied classes supported repressive measures. 2. The measure was supported by all major parties except the Akali Dal, which had withdrawn parliamentary support from the National Front coalition government in protest at the proposal. 3. In general Republicans supported the measure because its likely effect would be to undermine the long-lasting Democratic domination of the state legislature. 4. The measure was supported by dissident Tories, Country Whigs, as well as some Court Whigs. 5. Also supporting the measure are San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown and Sheriff Mike Hennessey. 6. American Legion National Commander Alan G. Lance indicated that his organization would target senators who fail to support the measure at the ballot box this fall. 7. And more students than not, he said, seem to support the measures. 8. And President Bush, a longtime opponent, announced he now supports the measure. 9. Another question would ask Ecuadorians whether they support measures to take politics out of the judicial system. |
