1.   Basal secretion was measured before the induction of the submaximal plateau -- formal maximal studies were not performed as this would have made the test unacceptably long.

2.   The submaximal plateau was started after a one hour basal period.

3.   The submaximal plateau lasted for three hours, and half way through this the subject smoked one cigarette at the usual rate.

4.   No subject, however, complained of nausea or any other gastrointestinal tract symptoms at any time during the submaximal plateau.
