1.   Often working as petty traders and peddlers, they turned over their earnings to Christian masters in exchange for protection from forced conversion to Christianity.

2.   Petty traders and small entrepreneurs, many in sub-urban and rural areas, may also suffer badly or not survive at all when this happens.
