1. The diagnosis of ulcerative colitis was based on chronic diarrhoea, an endoscopic appearance consistentwith colitis, and colon histology consistent with chronic colitis. 2. In one patient with three strictures, classification as benign was based on radiological studies and in two other patients it was based on the gross endoscopic appearances. 3. The diagnosis was based on established criteria including a typical endoscopic appearance supported by histological findings. 4. There was no difference in the endoscopic appearance of the upper gastrointestinal tract in the renal failure patients with and without H pylori infection. 5. Table II shows that endoscopic appearances did not change significantly during treatment. 6. The endoscopic appearance suggested malignancy in only half the cases and was compatible with gastritis or a benign peptic ulcer in the remaineder. |
