1. Successive Democratic presidents built on that idea until it reached its apotheosis under Carter and finally lost public support. 2. Although they agree on the goal, the Democratic president and the Republican governor are taking a different approach to the problem. 3. An unpopular Democratic president could help Wilson, possibly drawing angry Republicans to the polls, but more likely keeping disenchanted Democrats away. 4. And he would join the ranks of Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt as the only Democratic presidents to be re-elected in this century. 5. And if a conservative religious leader with a significant following calls the Democratic president a liar and a murderer, retaliating would seem the obvious course. 6. And both realize that voters want them to work with a Democratic president. 7. And it is not the first time that the former Democratic president and the former Republican secretary of state have worked together in a good international cause. 8. And if the line-item veto were a truly powerful tool, a Republican Congress would never have handed it to a Democratic president in the first place. 9. And presumably the new Democratic president enjoyed the movie about the fall of a Republican predecessor. 10. And in the White House, a weakened Democratic president is trying to sort out the new political realities. |
