1. Among the feathered residents are flamingos, toucans, kookaburras, egrets, brown pelicans, hornbills and trumpeter swans. 2. Although they have few natural enemies, brown pelicans have been the quarry of humans for various reasons over the years. 3. And for the brown pelicans and green jays and chachalacas and other species that live year-round in a region avid birdwaters cherish as their mecca. 4. As we walked I watched the brown pelicans sailing slowly overhead and thought of my only daughter, Nikki, who had died three years ago that month. 5. Balto laughed and pointed to three brown pelicans circling lazily overhead and later to dozens of fish jumping off our starboard side, a school of skipjack tuna. 6. Beyond the breakers lines of brown pelicans sailed just inches over the water. 7. Birders congregate at Folly Beach to spy for bald eagles, ospreys, brown pelicans and other species. 8. Bird-watchers will be treated to the low-lying Western gull nests as well as an occasional brown pelican nest. 9. A brown pelican -- enormous! |
