1. In one large installation, four blackened cooking pots called kazans are overturned on a strip of white cotton, mud and straw. 2. Several women are busy preparing lunch over four wood fires, next to a large wooden table covered with woven baskets and blackened pots filled with native foods. 3. They chop down trees for firewood, set blackened pots on open fires to boil grass or, for the fortunate, a few anemic-looking potatoes. 4. The corridors are lined with charred wood as women cook rice in blackened pots. 5. They arrive with few possessions -- often only a blackened cooking pot. 6. Outside the church, burned out kerosene lanterns lie beside blackened cooking pots. |
