1.  Experiments involve a spurious association between the Novel food and the illness which is usually induced chemically or by X-rays.

2.  Until recently, the leading biotechnology companies were reluctant to respond to criticism in this country for fear of making the novel foods an issue.

3.  Sources said the compromise deal would require information on labels in cases where a novel food or food ingredient was no longer equivalent to an existing food.

4.  The scientists said they wanted tighter rules on all novel foods, including GM, especially regulations covering allergy risks and the nutritional content of infant formula.
