1.   State officials say that bacteria in the tainted water could not survive underground or at least that the contamination would not spread through ground water.

2.   The news raised concern -- albeit short-lived -- that slack demand will spread to other makers of computer-related equipment.

3.   Then, after all that, the law will spread.

4.   It is quite possible that the war will end up in a quagmire and that hostilities will spread to neighboring countries.

5.   U.S. officials have said they did not pledge additional money to Thailand because they did not immediately realize how serious the crisis was or that it would spread.
