1.   The west front is vertical in emphasis with two tall towers capped by Gothic spires and with a plain faade decorated only by round-headed windows and doorways.

2.   Lincoln Cathedral still retains a Romanesque lower section to its west front with a remarkable portal.

3.   The interesting cloister is of late twelfth century design and part of the west front is Romanesque.

4.   Built in limestone, it was extensively restored in the nineteenth century when the Rheno-Lombardic west front took its final form.

5.   The latter, particularly those on the west front, are of especial interest on account of their transitional quality.

6.   The severe tall west front is finely proportioned, as is the contrasting eastern chevet showing the central tower above.

7.   The west front, with its two vast steeples, is harder in treatment than the east end.

8.   Much of this has been preserved or restored, particularly the west front of the building, above the arcaded atrium, and inside.

9.   Jubilant Republican dignitaries and more somber Democratic leaders turned the flag-draped west front of the Capitol into a patriotic stage for scenes of triumph and political pain.
