1.   Previously all radioactive waste had to be disposed of in one of three licensed landfills in the USA.

2.   Growing environmental opposition to nuclear power in these countries is likely to find a new focus if waste has to be stored and reprocessed on their own soil.

4.   But unlike the Korean wastes, high-level American wastes have no place to go.

5.   The newly repackaged radioactive waste will have to be stored for thousands of years, and government officials still do not have a permanent site for it.

6.   The wastes have some nutritive value, such as protein and calcium.

7.   The waste would therefore have to be returned there after reprocessing.

8.   Human waste has to be properly disposed of and treated.

9.   Reducing waste will therefore have the dual effect of improving environmental performance and reducing operating costs.

10.   Authorities had said Tuesday that if damage to the train was too severe, the nuclear waste would have to be loaded on to another train.
