1.   But for all this, there is a level of suspended disbelief that is necessary to these nutsy pleasures.

2.   But the suspended disbelief of an entire season at the Metropolitan Opera is not enough to make the voice and the accompaniment sound as if they belonged together.

3.   If you think about it too hard, the absurdity of it creeps in, and makes it hard to stay in that necessary state of suspended disbelief.

4.   Unfortunately, the suspended disbelief falls apart immediately.
