1.   Unlike conventional glass, it contains no silicon oxide.

2.   The chips used by the group contain a charge-carrying silicon layer covered by a thin insulating layer of silicon oxide.

3.   The filaments are then coated with another layer of silicon oxide and heated.

4.   Through the electron microscope the wires look like bridges, with tiny supporting pillars made of silicon oxide.
