1.   Apply a coat of a stain-killing sealer such as BIN or Kilz, then paint with two coats of a satin finish or semi-gloss enamel.

2.   After this you can finish with two coats of a satin finish varnish, or use a pigmented wood sealer as a combination stain and finish.

3.   After you are done protect the finish with a coat of clear satin finish varnish.

4.   Choose either a matte or satin finish, because many birds are repelled by high gloss surfaces.

5.   Fixtures with pewter or satin finishes are easy to care for because the matte surface hides scratches, fingerprints and water spots.

6.   High-gloss finishes tend to show scuff marks, scratches, traffic areas and dirt more readily than satin finishes, according to the National Wood Flooring Association.

7.   If you want a satin finish, apply two coats of high-gloss and the final of satin.
