1.   An independent data and safety monitoring board compared the frequency of all adverse events in the two groups during three biannual meetings.

2.   The Swedish nuclear safety board has closed down five elderly boiling-water nuclear reactors on safety grounds.

3.   Also testifying was James Hall, the chairman of the safety board, who expressed optimism about the investigation.

4.   American would not comment further on the report, saying that it was waiting for the safety board to issue a determination of probable causes.

5.   And the safety board called for an immediate campaign to educate pilots on new strategies for flying through icing conditions.

7.   As a result of the crash, the safety board made several recommendations to the FAA, which establishes and enforces regulations governing aviation.

8.   As is its usual practice, the safety board said it did not draw any conclusions because it was still in the early stage of the investigation.

9.   At another briefing on Thursday, Kallstrom was conspicuously absent from the podium he normally shares with Robert T. Francis, vice chairman of the safety board.

10.   At the FAA, Eliot Brenner, the chief spokesman, said his agency had not received anything formal from the safety board.
