1.   Also, have the roofer put a slather of roofing cement under each shingle along the edge of the roof, where the roof goes up at an angle.

2.   An alternative that is nearly as good is to apply roofing cement, then embed aluminum foil in this cement.

3.   Apply a generous bead of new roofing cement to the back of the patch, then position it so it covers the damaged area.

4.   Apply a generous dab of roofing cement under the shingle, then press it onto the cement.

5.   Apply a thick bead of roofing cement around the extension and another on the underside of the roof cap.

6.   As you remove shingles, patch any holes in the paper underlayment with roofing cement.

7.   Attach the vent cover to the tailpiece and apply roofing cement to the bottom of the flange before nailing it in place with roofing nails.

8.   Bend the flashing to fit inside the gutter and spread enough roofing cement around the edges to hold it in place.

9.   A line of roofing cement on the top half of the uppermost row of repair shingles will help seal out possible future water problems.
