1.   Every spring, the oldest canes should be removed to allow new shoots to develop.

2.   Fungal diseases such as anthracnose also infect canes, and can be kept in check when canes are removed each year.

3.   Grant suggests pruining the Nandina from its base by removing dead canes rather than chopping the entire top off.

4.   Keep an eye out for and remove canes with gray splotches of disease or swellings due to borers.

5.   Remove unproductive canes, dead or diseased canes, old and weak canes.
