1.   During an acute hyperglycaemia induced by intravenous infusion of glucose, gastric emptying, gastric acid secretion and pancreatic enzyme secretion are reduced in healthy subjects.

2.   Most patients were receiving standard treatment with bronchodilators, antibiotic prophylaxis against pseudomonas or staphylococcal infections, or both, and pancreatic enzyme supplements.

3.   None of the patients, however, were overtly diabetic, had clinical steatorrhoea, or were taking pancreatic enzyme supplements.

4.   This assumes that the plasma free amino acid pool is representative of the precursor for pancreatic enzyme synthesis.

5.   Support for this assumption was obtained from a similar study in pigs that showed that amino acids derived from the extracellular space were used directly for pancreatic enzyme synthesis.

6.   Infusion of caerulein has also been reported to cause divergent changes in pancreatic enzyme synthesis under certain conditions, as has intraduodenal administration of oleic acid.

7.   Various animal studies have shown inhibition of pancreatic enzyme secretion by pancreatic proteases in the duodenum.
